My EVS project was taking place in Jelgava, Latvia. I was volunteering in Zemgales NGO Center, along with other volunteers from different countries. The aim of participating in the project was to gain experience, improve the English language, get to know new culture and adapt in this culture and environment, learn foreigh language. Also one of the goals was to travel, discover interesting places, participate in trainings and camps, get out of my comfort zone and make many new friends all around the world. I wanted 1 year full of adventures and experience. When I was planning to participate in a similar project, I sent my CV and cover letter to several projects and then when I received an invitation from one of the projects it was in Latvia and although I did not have much time to think and wait for answer from other projects to make choice, I spontaneously made a decision go to Latvia. Also Latvia is a safe and secure country, which was very important to me. The opportunity to participate in European projects is the best way to express your best side and share interesting ideas with others. I am glad to have met people from different countries and different nationalities. I really like to work with them because I have learned many interesting and important things, which have further helped me to deepen my knowledge and skills.
During the project I participated in various activities, trainings and camps. I attended the arrival and mid-term trainings planned by the Latvian National Agency, where I met volunteers from different countries and nationalities. I took part in one camp called "Radi savu Jelgavu". They were talking about how to make a better and safer life for the community, improving the city, a better place for children, young people, the elderly, it was a massive change in the community they were trying to come up with new ideas to improve the lifestyle of the community. During my volunteering I had types of challenges which made me learn not only more about myself and my limits, but essentially how to plan and manage projects in order to achieve objectives in difficult situations. In doing so I learned how to prepare and organize such activities and workshops, beside the fact that i understood that we should use every opportunity, which presents itself, even though you sometimes need to be quite brave to get to it.
The most important thing I got from this project is that I learned about the culture of other countries, learned a new language and made many new friends. Through processing my time in Latvia with other volunteers, friends and mentors as well as during the trainings that I attended, I become more ready to express and share my emotions, thoughts and experiences as also gave me the opportunity and skills to reflect upon the different stages of my time as a volunteer and what role they play for my future and life in general. The impact of the project on my local environment was that I discovered similarities and differences and made comparisons. I see my own reality from a broader perspective and will bring back and share my experiences and interesting ideas with my local community. Furthermore, I got to know a great deal about European cultures by meeting up with other European Volunteers doing an EVS in Latvia. Despite all the differences, you can still see some common features in all cultures, which make us somehow belong together.
Take spontaneous decisions and it can bring you interesting and unforgettable experience!
Zemgales NGO Center thank you for your support and opportunity to get to know Latvia!
